LIVE: We The Kings – 30/01/13 – Scala, London

Opening tonight are Cheshire’s own, Blitz Kids. Even though the crowd is relatively small at this point of the evening, Blitz Kids played as if their lives depended on it. The band played through most of the tracks from their recently released mini-album. Having never seen Blitz Kids until tonight, I was stunned by how energetic the performance was. Stand out tracks were “Never Die” and “You’re Dead To Me”. I look forward to seeing/hearing more from these guys.

Opening with “Big Plans”, Natives were next to hit the stage. I know this reads very clichéd, but the band’s sound has matured tenfold since their Not Advised days. The highlight for me was watching a near capacity Scala singing every word to “This Island”. We were also given a preview of what’s to come, with a brilliant performance of “Stand For Something”. 2013 will be Natives’ year.

Having not seen We The Kings since their run of dates with You Me At Six back in 2010, I was really looking forward to seeing the band play live again. They didn’t dissapoint. Opening with WTK classic “She Takes Me High”, the London crowd burst into a frenzy. Keeping old and new fans happy, the band performed tracks from all 3 studio albums. We were treated to favourites such as “Skyway Avenue” and set definer “Check Yes Juliet”. Towards the middle of the set, the band mixed things up a little and played a few tracks acoustically. We were also treated to a few covers. As well as playing songs by the Swedish House Mafia and Jason Mraz, We The Kings topped it off with an awesome cover of Jimmy Eat World‘s The Middle. I felt that the band had definitely improved performance-wise since I last saw them, and their sound had improved as well playing an incredibly tight set. Overall an outstanding performance. I look forward to album number 4.
