LIVE: The Word Alive – 03/12/13 – O2 Academy, Islington

Kicking things off were Californian rockers Dayshell. I hadn’t heard much of the band going into tonight’s gig but was very impressed with the show they put on. Frontman  Shayley Bourget did a great job interacting with the London crowd. He said he couldn’t hit the high notes on a few of the songs, but you could hardly tell – the tracks sounded great, he sounded great and the band played flawlessly. Highlight tracks were “Not Coming In” and set closer “Share With Me“. Hopefully we’ll see a Dayshell UK headline tour in the near future.

Up next were Michigan’s I See Stars. I last saw these guys play the Slam Dunk Festival a few years ago – they put on amazing show then and tonight’s set proved to be none the different. As soon as Brent Allen hit the first chord on his guitar, the crowd went off! The mix of screamo and clean vocals works extremely well, and this was particularly evident with tonight’s non-stop crowd. The band played a mix of material from their latest offering ‘New Demons’ and previous album ‘Digital Renegade’. Highlight’s were “New Demons“, “Ten Thousand Feet” and “Filth Friends Unite“. Overall, a very fast paced, riff heavy set – I look forward to the band’s UK return next year.

Headliners The Word Alive played brilliantly. The standard of musicianship was high throughout the night and The Word Alive continued this. The crowd reaction to the band was very similar to I See Stars. As soon as the band started their first track, the crowd went crazy! The venue, wasn’t even at capacity, but with the amount of noise and energy coming from the crowd, you wouldn’t of been able to tell! I was thrown back by how good drummer Luke Holland was. I’ve seen some of his stuff on YouTube, but seeing it first hand was really cool. The band sounded incredibly tight and they played a very good mixed set. Highlight’s were “Entirety” and set closer “Life Cycles“.
