LIVE: HIM – 01/11/13 – KOKO, London

A few weeks ago, I went to see Finnish metal legends HIM play KOKO in London. I first discovered HIM whilst watching episodes of MTV show Viva La Bam back in 2005/2006. They’ve toured the UK so many times since then, but I’ve never had the chance to catch them live until now.

The band opened with “All Lips Go Blue” – a new track from their recently released album ‘Tears On Tape’. It sounds great live and got the whole room singing along. It has been well documented that frontman Ville Valo has a history with alcohol and cigarettes, and drummer Gas recently suffered a strain injury to his wrist – but this had no detrimental effect on tonight’s performance. Both frontman and band sounded tight and played exceptionally well. This was especially evident in third track “Wings Of A Butterfly” and the bands cover of Chris Isaak classic “Wicked Game”.

The old school HIM fans went crazy for the 2003 track “Soul On Fire”. Another highlight was the performance of acoustic track, “The Funeral Of Hearts” – The band sounded clean and the vocals sharp – I didn’t know Ville played acoustic guitar till tonight’s gig! The band closed their set with “Sleepwalking Past Hope”.

Overall a very enjoyable gig. The only downside was the lack of interaction between band and audience, but this was made up for with a tight performance.

“Tears On Tape” is out now.
