ALBUM: Tonight Alive – “The Other Side”

The_Other_Side_-_Tonight_AliveA lot of people compare Aussie five piece Tonight Alive to Paramore. The two bands couldn’t be any more different. Tonight Alive‘s follow up to ‘What Are You So Scared Of?’ puts this into perspective.

Opening with ‘The Ocean’ a pop-rock explosion of solid guitar riffs and harmonious vocals by frontwoman Jenna McDougall, the tone is set for the rest of the album. This leads into ‘Don’t Wish’ and recent single ‘Lonely Girl’.

I know it’s clichéd to say this, but from listening to the first couple of tracks, the band have grown. Their sound is tighter and more melodic. The pop-punk elements from the previous album are here but they aren’t as obvious. It doesn’t sound like pop-punk record – it’s a great rock album. There are elements of punk in tracks like ‘The Fire’ which give the album that extra edge.

The must listen to tracks are ‘Don’t Wish’ and ‘Say Please’. The heavier elements in the former make’s the whole album stand out.

It is said that the second album is always a hard one, but Tonight Alive have pulled it off with “The Other Side” – It’s a brilliant LP.

“The Other Side” is out now.
