EP: Knife Party – “100% No Modern Talking”

James Thake December 21, 2011

It’s not until somebody tells you that Knife Party is the side project of Pendulum’s Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen, that you realise it’s a side project of Pendulum’s Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen. That sound is definitely there, especially the gritier dubstep that was at the state-of-the-art when Immersion dropped a year and a half ago. The thing is, you might not have noticed it had nobody told you – this sound is fresh. It’s exciting. It’s really filthy, but like Pendulum’s music before it, you could be dancing along to it in any commercial club.

I personally got hooked on this sound at a commercial club (although it was actually a live gig) when Nero played the Knife Party remix of their song ‘Crush on You’ when I went to see their tour at Kasbah, Coventry in October. Turn a cheesy 80s pop song into a belting dance track and you’re on to a winner with me, and this mix managed to turn that dance track into another, completely fresh, belting dance track.

The big hit to look out for on their new release is going to be ‘Internet Friends’. As soon as you first hear it, the hook is imprinted on your mind: “You blocked me on Facebook, and now you’re going to die.” If you’re a fan of dubstep or electro, this should get you going.

The EP is called ’100% No Modern Talking’ and it’s available now to download for free from KnifeParty.com. You can also check out the brand new video for the song ‘Antidote’ – a collaboration with the Swedish House Mafia out on the 15th of January.

While this is technically just a test of the new (and shiny) website, it can’t be stressed enough how awesome this EP is. You should grab it straight away.
