My Passion – "Inside This Machine" Album Review

Hitchin goth-rockers, My Passion have been sitting around with follow up album to Corporate Flesh Party for nearly a year now. Titled Inside This Machine, this is without a doubt, the band’s best work to date. Incorporating various styles of music, the band have gone out of the way to make sure this album caters to everyone’s tastes. There is everything from electronic, dance, pop, rock and even acoustic on this CD.

Opening with the mechanical ‘Into This Machine’, we are sent right into ‘Seven Birds’. This is a brilliant track. What I like most about the track is that it’s riff-heavy. The vocals from both Jonathan and Laurence compliment the track exceptionally well. The bass and drum line give the track that extra something to make it standout even more.

Other standout tracks are ‘The Girl Who Lost Her Smile’ with the catchy chorus and ‘Lily White Lies‘ with its eerie but awesome intro. The track ‘Come Back To Me‘ surprised me, in the sense that it’s acoustic! No-one would think of My Passion going acoustic. It’s a great track and one that you must listen to.

Usually when I listen to other bands albums, I end up skipping tracks. With Inside This Machine, I didn’t have to. This album is one where you can listen to it, from start to finish without skipping a song. It says a lot about a band, where a review of their album has no negative points at all. This is most certainly the case here. Rarely are groups so engaging, musically interesting and just generally enjoyable.

Sometimes described as a ‘Marmite band’, Inside This Machine will remove this label given to My Passion. In my opinion, it’s one of the best albums of 2011 and will be worth the wait.

Inside This Machine is released on the April 18th through Spinefarm Records.
